Villa Azadi is one of eight reception centers for unaccompanied minors (UMs) in Greece and one of the newest. With 96 beds it covers one third of the official housing capacity for underage refugees.

A small history …

Villa Azadi has been opened in order to respond to a crisis in the detention centre of Lesvos island in the summer of 2008. In a broader context the opening was one step of several the government took in the process of adjusting the reception system for minors in Greece to the realities of the increasing influx of refugees and the decreasing possibilities to leave the country.
